"I'm not as great as you think I am." is what commonly slips out of my lips to my friends when I am reminded of my sin and weaknesses. Though it is sort of true, but I was prompted that the way we continually talk about our own inabilities is an insult to our Creator. To complain over our incompetence or fallenness is to accuse God falsely of having overlooked us. It might sound humble to men, but it isn't examining yourself from God's perspective. Such thoughts and statement might even be inappropriate and disrespectful to Him. We say things such as, “Oh, I am not a saint. I am a sinful man.", or for my case "I still fall and I am not as good as you think I am" might seem to mean “No, Lord, it is impossible for You to save and sanctify me; there are opportunities I have not had and so many imperfections in me; no, Lord, it isn’t possible.” That may sound wonderfully humble to others, but before God it could be an attitude of defiance and pride; that it is based on our effort and not what He has already done for us.
Conversely, the things that sound humble before God may sound exactly the opposite to people. To say, “Thank God, I know I am saved, purified and set apart for You.” is in God’s eyes the purest expression of humility. It means you have so completely surrendered yourself to God that you know He is true, and what He has done on the cross has the power to liberate you. Don't get caught up worrying about whether you are saying the right "Christian thing", don't be bothered by what others may think regarding your thoughts, but always be humble before God. He looks at the heart.
But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me (1 Cor 15:10)
There is only one relationship that really matters, and I believe that is our personal relationship with our personal Redeemer and Lord. If you maintain that at all costs and letting everything else go, God will fulfil His purpose through your life.
There is no failure or flaw in character that He cannot work in and through.
